AMÁLI
Handwoven Gold, Earth-Born Gemstones & the Artistry of Sara Freedenfeld.
There are some designers whose work feels less like jewellery and more like a kind of alchemy. Amáli Jewelry is one of them. Founded twenty-five years ago by New York–based artist Sara Freedenfeld, the brand has become known for its signature textile-inspired goldwork and gemstones that feel as though they were lifted straight from the earth and suspended in light.
Sara’s journey into jewellery began far from a studio bench. While travelling through South America as a young backpacker, she encountered artisans who braided horsehair, wove metals, and crafted intricate objects using techniques passed down through generations. That experience shifted something. She returned home with a new fascination for making, a handful of tools, and a desire to translate the softness of textiles into precious metals.
Sara Freedenfeld, Founder of Amáli
“Sometimes I am bewildered that these awe-inspiring specimens come out of the earth and clay. I try to design with simplicity, framing each natural masterpiece so that the stone remains center stage”
What has emerged over twenty years is an unmistakable Amáli signature. Colour plays a central role, often drawn from natural materials Sara has collected or encountered during her travels. Ethiopian opals, emeralds, tourmalines, tanzanites, and antique-cut diamonds are individually chosen, then framed in hand-woven gold that sits somewhere between ancient and modern. Every link, every loop, every connection is made with intention.
Amáli’s pieces carry a quiet richness. They feel worldly yet intimate, luxurious yet grounded. They are jewels meant to be worn, lived in, softened by experience and memory. Sara often speaks of jewellery as something that should accompany a person through life rather than stay tucked away for rare occasions. Her work reflects that philosophy, elegant, expressive, and beautifully wearable.
As Amáli celebrates twenty-five years, the brand stands as a testament to what happens when an artist follows instinct over convention. Sara’s jewellery bridges continents and craft traditions, honouring the textures, colours, and stories that first inspired her. It is jewellery that captures a sense of movement and earthiness while remaining unmistakably refined.
“I am inspired to make pieces for the woman who sees jewelry no differently than the art she displays on the walls of her home. She appreciates beautiful things, but she’s not hungry for symbols of status and wealth.”
