MERCURIUS

ON STONE, METAL & TRANSFORMATION

Mercurius is a fine jewelry studio rooted in symbolism, material intelligence, and thoughtful making. Founded by husband and wife team Alisa and David Thorp, the brand takes its name from Mercurius, a central figure in alchemical philosophy who represents transformation, unity, and the idea that matter holds spirit within it. That concept sits at the core of their work. Jewelry is treated not as ornament alone, but as a vessel for meaning, balance, and personal resonance.

Design wise, Mercurius draws heavily from the natural world and from historical design movements that value structure and flow in equal measure. You can see echoes of functional forms found in nature alongside the sinuous curves of Art Nouveau and the graphic order of Art Deco. The result is jewelry that feels timeless and talismanic, with a strong sense of harmony between stone and metal.

David Thorp’s dual expertise as a master goldsmith and lapidary is central to the brand. His ability to design simultaneously in stone and metal allows for a deeper exploration of form, proportion, and material interaction. Stones are not treated as separate components but as integral to the design from the very beginning.

Alisa complements this with a strong focus on sourcing and material selection, and her ongoing studies in gemology at the GIA further deepen the brand’s material knowledge. Ethics and transparency are fundamental to Mercurius.

he studio works with Fairmined Certified gold, traceable colored gemstones, and post consumer recycled diamonds, guided by the belief that the origin of each element is inseparable from the beauty of the finished piece. Every stage of the process, from design through to final production, takes place in their Oakland, California studio, where time honored goldsmithing techniques sit alongside modern technology. The result is jewelry that feels considered, elemental, and quietly powerful, shaped by both philosophy and handcraft.
